Understanding Your Hearing Health

At Coastal Audiology, we provide thorough hearing assessments for adults of all ages. Our comprehensive testing helps identify hearing loss, determine its type and severity, and guide you toward the most effective treatment options.

When Should You Have Your Hearing Tested?

Regular hearing tests are important for maintaining your overall health and quality of life. We recommend having your hearing tested if you’re experiencing any signs of hearing difficulty, or as part of routine health monitoring.

Common Signs You May Need a Hearing Test:

  • Difficulty following conversations, especially in noisy environments
  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
  • Turning up the TV or radio volume louder than others prefer
  • Struggling to hear on the telephone
  • Finding it exhausting to follow conversations
  • Missing doorbells, phone rings, or alarm sounds
  • Feeling that people are mumbling
  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)
  • A family history of hearing loss
  • Exposure to loud noise at work or recreation

What to Expect During Your Hearing Test

Your hearing assessment at Coastal Audiology is a comfortable, non-invasive process that typically takes 60-90 minutes. Our experienced audiologists will guide you through each step.

Case History

We’ll discuss your hearing concerns, medical history, lifestyle, and any situations where you find hearing difficult. This helps us tailor the assessment to your specific needs.

Otoscopy

A visual examination of your ear canals and eardrums using a specialized instrument. This helps identify any blockages, infections, or structural issues that might affect your hearing.

Pure Tone Audiometry

You’ll wear headphones and respond to a series of tones at different pitches and volumes. This test measures the quietest sounds you can hear across different frequencies.

Speech Testing

We assess your ability to hear and understand speech at various volume levels, which gives us insight into how hearing loss affects your everyday communication.

Tymps

Tympanometry evaluates how well your eardrum moves and can help identify middle ear problems, fluid, or eardrum perforations.

Once your hearing assessment is complete, we’ll provide you with a detailed explanation of your results in clear, easy-to-understand terms. If hearing loss is detected, we’ll discuss the available options, which may include:

After Your Hearing Test

Once your hearing assessment is complete, we’ll provide you with a detailed explanation of your results in clear, easy-to-understand terms. If hearing loss is detected, we’ll discuss the available options, which may include:

Treatment Options

Depending on your results, recommendations might include hearing aids, medical treatment, assistive listening devices, communication strategies, or referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. We’ll work with you to develop a personalized plan that fits your lifestyle and budget.

Ongoing Support

At Coastal Audiology, your care doesn’t end with the test. We provide ongoing support, regular follow-ups, and adjustments to ensure you’re hearing your best. We’re here to answer questions and help you adapt to any changes in your hearing.

Sara we found on fb through a group, and we have been travelling from Toowoomba, because she is the first person to actually want to help and get to the bottom of what may be going on for my daughter. My daughter has seen a couple other audiologists since she was 5, and she has had fluctuating results and persist pressure. Each time told to just come back in X amount of months. This has been ongoing for almost 4 years now. Sara is the first one to piece it all together, care, go above and beyond. She let us hire auditory devices such as aids and mic, and the difference in my daughter has been astronomical. Sara is worth the travel, money and time.

Sara’s ability to engage and assess children who struggle with their communication or who have developmental difficulties is outstanding. Our 3 year old old really enjoyed working with Sara and we were very impressed with her professionalism and expertise. We highly recommend Coastal Audiology as the place to go for children.

MS SARA PATTERSON AUDIOLOGIST has been my primary carer, managing my long-standing hearing loss in both ears, for some years now. She is an experienced, professional, and a most effective Practitioner, who is empathetic & a good communicator as well. I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone who has auditory needs & requires a balanced, professional, experienced audiologist’s management. I travel from NSW, in order to avail myself of her expertise & management skills.

Sara is an amazing audiologist!! Her business has a real personalised attention to detail aspect. She didn't try to make my son fit the testing process, instead she adapted to him and helped him to find his way through the testing process which allowed us to get the most important information and as much information as we could in a 2 year old who hadn't had success at other more retail-like audiology practices. She is kind, patient and flexible which in my opinion is absolutely necessary when dealing with small kids. Absolutely fabulous experience! Highly recommend!!
