Consent for Treatment
Coastal Audiology collects personal and health information so that clients can receive hearing services from them. You have the right to these records and may ask for them to be altered at any time. Your information is stored on Halaxy and is accessed by Coastal Audiology employees that are involved in your hearing health.
Your information may be passed on to the Hearing Services, Department of Health, hearing aid providers when devices are ordered, repaired, or if they help facilitate your rehabilitation program and others as required by law. I acknowledge that the details of my appointments will only be passed on to family or health practitioners requested by me.
A signed consent for the treatment, assessment and procedure is required prior to commencement. Consent for a treatment of minors, or intellectually disabled will not be considered legal if provided, as their consent will not be deemed competent to make decisions on their own behalf. In such instances, consent will need to be obtained from a parent, care giver, or power of attorney.
Coastal Audiology abides by the Information Privacy Act 2009 (QLD).
Only treatments with electronic signature remain valid. I give consent for my assessment results to be sent to the below contacts. I understand and give consent for Coastal Audiology to collect my personal and health information.
Verbal consent is sufficient for removal of ear wax by a Coastal Audiology practitioner using micro suction and curette technology.
By attending consultation with our practitioner, your consent for examination and treatment is implied. Consent for treatment of minors, the intellectually disabled or others not considered legally competent to make decisions on their own behalf, will be obtained from a parent, guardian or attorney (as appropriate) who must be in attendance at time of consultation or provide written consent if unable to attend.
Complications of ear wax removal with micro suction and curettage are uncommon. Possible complications, side-effects and material risks inherent in the procedure include:
Incomplete removal of ear wax, requiring return visit. Reasons include:
- Severely impacted wax
- Unable to maintain direct vision
- Wax may be pushed further down the canal
- Trauma including canal trauma, perforation of the eardrum and minor bleeding
- Discomfort
- Increased tinnitus
- Hearing Loss
- Vertigo and Nausea
Where wax has not been softened adequately, or the practitioner deems the procedure unsafe, wax may not be able to be removed at all. Referral to an ENT specialist may be recommended.
Our practitioners have completed a Nationally Accredited Course in Micro-Suction and Aural Hygiene and a Course in Aural Care training for Ear Wax Removal using micro suction and curettage. The procedure is performed under direct visualisation using microscopic vision via specialised glasses called loupes.
To ensure the risk of complication is minimised, it is essential that accurate past medical history is supplied to our practitioner. In addition, it is important that you remain relatively still during the procedure as sudden movement may significantly increase the risk of Ear Drum Perforation, Permanent Hearing Loss and/ or Bleeding.
If your wax is very impacted and dry, it may not be able to be removed in one visit. You will be sent away for softening and a second visit may be required. Return visits are charged at the discretion of the Registered Nurse.
